Many drivers take left turns easily, without even considering the risks. It’s just such a consistent part of driving that they never even think about trying to avoid those left turns.
The reality is that it may be smart to avoid left turns when possible. The problem is that a left turn, unless you are on a one-way street, usually means that you have to drive in front of a flow of oncoming traffic. If any of those oncoming drivers make a mistake, or if you make a mistake while turning left, it could result in a very serious accident.
Can’t you tell that the road is clear?
Of course, most drivers diligently check the oncoming lanes before turning. Shouldn’t this easily be enough to keep them safe?
It may be, but accidents can still happen. For instance, maybe the oncoming driver is speeding in low light conditions. It appears like there is plenty of distance to execute the left turn, but the driver closes the gap very quickly and an accident results. Even checking the lanes isn’t enough when other drivers are unpredictable.
Consider, also, the issue of inattentional blindness, where the brain filters out information that does not seem important. This can sometimes cause drivers to overlook motorcycles and other smaller vehicles. So even if the oncoming lanes appear to be empty, are they really?
Seeking compensation
A high percentage of car accidents happen at intersections, especially during left turns. If you have suffered injuries due to another driver’s negligence, make sure you know how to seek financial compensation to help cover lost wages, medical bills and much more.
